Deciding when and what date can be a very difficult decision to make indeed for any couple, but for me as a fellow bride to be myself; it was a very easy one to make. I had to have a winter wedding.

For me a winter wedding is perfect for many reasons, personally I hate the hot weather, which stems back from memories as a teenager being a bridesmaid to my Auntie during a desperately hot August, and the heat was that intense that everybody’s make up ran and the bridal party was forced to go home and shower before the reception started it was awful. But despite the heat, I think that winter weddings offer a special kind of romance, maybe it’s the Christmassy feeling in the air, but for me a roaring log fire and plenty of warming winter cocktails were the order of the day, and my very own winter wedding was booked.

Getting a winter wedding right can be very hard work, and for me the struggles I faced was trying to strike the right balance between embracing the seasons and festivities and not going too Christmas overboard. I found it far easier to introduce little wintery touches here and there, rather than making it a direct theme.

A great way to do this I found, was to opt for crisp winter colours for my colour scheme as opposed to selecting typical ‘Christmassy’ colours such as red and gold. I have chosen a rather muted silver / grey colour for my bridesmaids’ dresses, as this gorgeous colour is subtle and sophisticated as well as been quite seasonal and sexy, as the hint of shimmery colour injects some sparkle to this simple shade. To add a hint of warmth I choose a soft blush pink shade for my flower girl which shakes things up a little bit and adds a touch of warmth and girly romance.

Using little hints of winter within the decorations was also a great way of introducing and acknowledging the season, without going overboard. I love the romance and cosiness of a winter wedding, but it was hard to try and incorporate these elements without my reception venue looking like Narnia! Eventually, I used beautiful natural elements such as rustic, wintery pine cones that I sauced in local parks and I spruced them up with a lick of metallic paint and a splash of glitter and plan on dotting them around the reception, as a subtle way of welcoming the winter season. I have also used pine cones and sprigs of cinnamon to create my own garland, which I am going to hang about the open fires at the reception venue, not only will it look beautiful, but it will fill the air with that unmistakable spicy winter aroma, hopefully adding some extra abidance to atmosphere.

Hopefully everything will be alright on the day, and with 7 months still to wait, there is plenty of time for a few dress rehearsals. I hope that brides to be who are hosting their very own winter affair will let their imagination run wild, and don’t be afraid to try a little  DIY.
